150 Years Young: Johns Hopkins Celebrates a Century and a Half With Baltimore

Johns Hopkins is 150 years old this year — and instead of just looking back, the university threw a party looking forward, right in the heart of East Baltimore.

On September 25, nearly 300 neighbors, community partners, and leaders packed into Turnaround Tuesday’s headquarters at Zion Baptist Church to celebrate what Mayor Brandon Scott called the “deep partnership” between the city and Johns Hopkins. Governor Wes Moore and JHU President Ron Daniels joined the celebration of 150 years since the university’s 1876 founding.

The day’s most powerful story belonged to Charles McCleary. The 59-year-old welder walked into Turnaround Tuesday back in 2019 looking for a new start — and found a training program for peer recovery coaches that changed his life. By December of that year, Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center had hired him, and he’s been helping others in recovery ever since.

That’s the Hopkins-Baltimore partnership in a nutshell: world-class research and medicine on one side, and real jobs and second chances for neighbors on the other. Here’s to the next 150. Source: Johns Hopkins Hub
