The short version: Ahoy, Baltimore! Robert Cradle, a barber for 40 years, has been named the Most Benevolent Beard in America — winning Wahl’s Benevolent Beards Contest grand prize of $5,000 for himself and $20,000 for his charity, Rob’s Barbershop Community Foundation. He was celebrated right here in Baltimore on Sunday, October 25, when Wahl’s Mobile Barbershop parked on RavensWalk before the Ravens game and offered free beard trims from 9 a.m. to noon.
The foundation brings grooming services, hygiene products and barber training to underserved communities. Cradle started it after hearing from individuals at a nearby homeless shelter who couldn’t afford his services — he began raising money and paying his barbers to cut their hair. “The impact was immediate as the people we served got to experience the dignity and confidence that comes from a neat and clean appearance,” he said. “This translated into job interviews, better school attendance and more.” Today the foundation also offers barber training and mentorship, plus an online database connecting volunteer barbers with organizations and individuals who need support.
Now in its fifth year, the contest celebrates bearded men who combine good grooming with goodwill. Five finalists were chosen, and America’s votes helped decide the winner — a fine reminder that a fresh cut and a kind heart can change a neighbor’s whole week.
