Johns Hopkins Opens a Bigger Homewood Early Learning Center for 162 Children

The short version: Ahoy, Baltimore! Johns Hopkins just cut the ribbon on a brand-new Homewood Early Learning Center that can serve 162 children — two-thirds more than the old center — giving Homewood campus families a much bigger place to learn and play.

University leaders gathered on Friday, October 23 to celebrate the official opening. The center cares for the children of faculty and staff on the Homewood campus and is operated by Downtown Baltimore Child Care. President Ron Daniels and Meredith Stewart, vice president and chief human resources officer, marked the occasion alongside the project team, including architect Chi Yan and Heather Sharma, assistant director for design and construction.

The new building more than doubles the space — from 11,300 to 27,512 square feet — with 16 classrooms, administrative offices, work and conferencing spaces, dedicated drop-off and parking areas, and an 18,600-square-foot outdoor play area. The earlier facility, opened in 2015, served 90 children.

It is built green, too: the all-electric facility uses heat-pump technology, collects rainwater for plant watering, and is designed to maximize natural daylight, with the university aiming for LEED Gold certification. More room, more daylight, more little Baltimoreans learning — fair winds to the class of the sandbox!
