The short version: Ahoy, Baltimore! A brand-new citywide coat drive launched today with one big, warm goal — 5,000 new winter coats for 5,000 City Schools students before winter break — and every Baltimorean is invited to help fill the rack.
South Baltimore 7, a nonprofit, announced the 5,000 Coat Drive in partnership with Baltimore City Public Schools. Coats will go to students at eight schools: Arundel Elementary, Bay-Brook Elementary/Middle, Benjamin Franklin High School at Masonville Cove, Curtis Bay Elementary, The Historic Cherry Hill Elementary/Middle, Lakeland Elementary/Middle, Maree G. Farring Elementary/Middle, and Westport Academy. The drive culminates December 18 with a celebration and delivery.
Steven Johnson, executive director of South Baltimore 7, said: “This is about more than a coat… somebody sees them, somebody cares about them…” City Schools CEO Dr. Jermaine Dawson said a warm coat “can make a meaningful difference.” Supporters include State Senator Bill Ferguson and Councilwoman Phylicia Porter.
Ways to help: donate a new coat, make a tax-deductible contribution, become a campaign ambassador, organize a collection, or volunteer to sort, size, and pack — and tuck an encouraging note in a pocket, like “You’ve got this” or “Someone in Baltimore is cheering for you.” Learn more and give at South Baltimore 7.
