All hands on deck for some hands-on learning! Three students from Carver Vocational Technical High School in Baltimore City are among the first six students in a brand-new statewide pilot that connects tech-school students with paid internships in the skilled trades.
Announced October 29 by Governor Wes Moore and the Maryland Department of General Services, the program pairs students with experienced mentors in the department’s Office of Facilities Management and its Office of Design, Construction, and Energy teams. Interns will gain on-site experience in project management, design, HVAC maintenance, and capital planning at worksites in the Baltimore region and Carroll County, plus resume support and networking opportunities.
The first cohort includes three Carver students and three students from Carroll County Career and Technology Center, with plans to adapt and expand the program over the next few years. “This partnership is about creating opportunity,” said Carver Principal Craig Rivers. “We are ensuring that our students gain the skills, experiences, and professional connections needed to thrive.”
The pilot builds on more than $35 million invested through the state’s EARN Maryland program, which has provided upskilling for more than 6,200 Marylanders and training and job placement for another 4,500 in high-growth fields including the skilled trades.
