National Geographic Names Baltimore One of the Best Places in the World to Travel in 2027

The short version: Ahoy, Baltimore! Pack your bags, crew — Charm City just landed on one of the world’s most coveted travel lists.

National Geographic’s “Best Places in the World to Travel to in 2027” features 25 destinations, and Baltimore is on it. The entry, by writer Brooke Sabin, is subheaded “History shines anew in the birthplace of the American railroad” and celebrates Baltimore’s role launching U.S. railroading with the nation’s first commercial railroad in 1827, the B&O.

The former B&O Railroad Museum has rebranded as the National Museum of Railroad History & Innovation, with a $38 million expansion and a new Innovation Hall opening in January 2027. The entry also spotlights Lexington Market — established in 1782 and reopened in a new 60,000-square-foot building after a $45 million redevelopment, home of Faidley’s Seafood — plus the waterfront and Inner Harbor, the Baltimore Blueway’s 20 miles of kayaking trails, and Fort McHenry.
