The Captain’s BARCStoberfest Preview: 2,000 Dogs, One Big Park, Zero Excuses

The short version: The 22nd Annual BARCStoberfest takes over Patterson Park on Saturday, October 24 (10 a.m.–2 p.m.), and it’s Baltimore’s biggest pet-friendly party of the year — a 5K, a brand-new half-mile pet parade, a Halloween pet costume contest, and a dog-friendly beer garden, all raising money for BARCS, Maryland’s highest-volume open-admission animal shelter. Tickets/registration are live now.

What BARCStoberfest actually is

Every fall, BARCS — the Baltimore Animal Rescue and Care Shelter — throws its biggest fundraiser of the year in Patterson Park. BARCS is an open-admission shelter, which means it takes in every animal that comes through its doors: somewhere between 11,000 and 13,000 a year, more than any other shelter in Maryland. This year’s festival is the 22nd, with a $400,000 fundraising goal (already past $96,000 as of this weekend, per the official tally), and organizers are expecting roughly 3,000 humans and 2,000 dogs. If your dog has never experienced 1,999 other dogs in one park, now’s the time.

Every dollar raised pays for medical care, food, and shelter for the thousands of animals BARCS takes in.

The lineup

Ready, Set, SNIFF! 5K — Run it or walk it (the first loop is the old 1-mile walk route if you want the short version). Registration is $50 and includes a commemorative t-shirt, a doggie bandana, and a free drink in the beer garden. Register on RunSignup.

NEW: The Half-Mile Pet Parade — This year replaces the old 1-mile walk with a shorter, spirited stroll built for pets of all sizes, ages, and energy levels. Create a fundraising page, donate or raise $50 minimum, and you and your pet get the t-shirt and bandana too. Details at barcstoberfest.org.

The Howl-o-Ween Pet Costume Contest — Yes, your dog in a pirate costume absolutely counts, and yes, the Captain endorses this enthusiastically.

The Barkin’ Beer Garden — A dog-friendly beer garden with live music. This is the part where you realize your Saturday peaked at noon.

Plus local vendors, food trucks, a shopping market, and kids’ activities.
