More than 700 people gathered in person and virtually on Saturday, Oct. 10 at Johns Hopkins Medicine’s Turner Auditorium in East Baltimore for the 16th Henrietta Lacks Memorial Lecture — a celebration of the life and legacy of Henrietta Lacks and a forum on bioethics in health care. This year’s keynote speaker was Jeffrey Kahn of the Johns Hopkins Berman Institute of Bioethics, and Dr. Arthur “Jason” Vaught spoke on how Lacks’ legacy connects to improving care for women and families. The day also featured a dance troupe performance, an update on the Henrietta Lacks building, and honors: the Urban Health Institute’s $15,000 Henrietta Lacks Memorial Award went to Muevetón + BabyFest 5K & Health and Fitness Expo, a free annual event at Patterson Park, and Prymisce Anderson received the Henrietta Lacks Dunbar Health Sciences Scholarship. Since 2010, this lecture has reminded us that ethical research protects the rights and interests of participants and communities.
